The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a joint that connects your jaw to your skull through a series of muscles, ligaments, and nerves. This joint aids in the opening and closing of your mouth. When this joint is damaged, a person can begin to hear clicking noises, have difficulty opening and closing, experience pain when moving the joint, experience headaches, and several other symptoms.
There are several factors that can cause temporomandibular disorders (TMD). It is often caused by the muscles, joints, poor habits, and genetics. Determining the exact cause of your temperomandibular symptoms can sometimes be difficult but usually begins with a thorough exam. Often times, treatment of temporomandibular disorders may be done with a splint and some bite correction. Dr. Washington is trained in the treatment and diagnosis of certain TMD and would be happy to perform an examination. Please call today for your consultation.
